Hi everyone and I hope you are having a nice day!
Here I come with a series of 8 articles on “Corporate Happiness”, or how to feel profoundly fulfilled, calm, happy, motivated, energetic and productive at work. After you read all the 8 articles and implement all the suggestions, you will have no way to remain unhappy and unfulfilled at work, guaranteed! I feel I have to write about it, because it took me much effort and many years until I figured out my quest for happiness in my career. Now being a happiness coach, psychologist and a corporate trainer I can help you with that, too.
Why is that so important? Because if you feel happy at work, you will be on average 37% more productive, engaged and creative and on top, being happy feels really good. Times change and we need to be innovative and profound in order to be able to adapt to these new realms.
See if you recognize yourself in one of more of these situations:
How many of the above apply to you?
In these series I am going to bring light to different reasons why people feel unhappy at work and give you practical ideas of how to handle that.
Today I am going to tell you about 4 core drivers that you unconsciously try to fulfill in your career. This information is taken from Sigmund Freud and later developed into the system-vector studies by Russian psychologists. See which description is the most applicable to you, start working in this field and see your happiness at work increase.
DRIVEN BY GROWTH (skin vector). If you are such a person, then your biggest need in your career will be to expand your impact, to achieve higher material and social status, to bring something to the next level. Doing this will make you happy at work. Your talents are creativity, leadership, logic, agility.
To become happier at work you should:
DRIVEN BY MASTERY. If you are such a person, then your primarily need in your career will be to know all the little and big things about your field and your profession and to become a real reliable expert. In today’s world the commitment to mastery is rare. And if you get deprived from the opportunity of digging deeper in your area of expertise, finding how different aspects function under different conditions and what are the norms and best practices in every aspect – you become very frustrated, unproductive and unfulfilled.
Your strong sides are analytical mind, hardworking attitude and attention to detail.
To become happier at work you should:
DRIVEN BY FEELINGS (visual vector). If your primary vector is visual, then your biggest need at work is to feel at peace. If there is too much stress or conflicts at work or just some people that are unpleasant for you – this makes you question your career. Your talents are in creating harmony and in being a good communicator.
To become happy at work you should focus on:
DRIVEN BY VALUES (sound vector). If you are such a person, then your main concern will be to find the answers to the profound questions of who you are, what is the ultimate good you can do in your work and for what, what is your true vocation. Your core talent and at the same time your core need is to understand your own nature and the nature of a human being.
To become happy at work you should:
Which of these descriptions apply to you the most?
If you manage employees – make sure that your work environment caters to the needs of all these 4 types.
Do you recognize yourself in one or several of these contexts?
Please write me in private or in comments if you have any of these or if you have other reasons for being anxious.
So, what to do?
Anxiety can be eliminated forever, you just need to dedicate your time and effort to doing that. I guarantee this will pay off big time!
There is a very simple connection: what you think is what you feel and what you do (or what you suppress). So, in order not to have this anxiety which sometimes even may go over the top if you suppress it, you need to lean to control your thoughts.
It is not that difficult. Same as you control the movements of your body, you can also control the process of your thoughts.
This exercise is called “mind police”.
As a Step 1 – you start realizing what you are thinking right now.
As a Step 2 – you start evaluating if this thought does any good to you. If the thought is positive or neutral – it is ok, keep it. If it is negative and fear driven – stop thinking it. Some may say that it is necessary to think of negative scenarios and problems – I totally agree. The problem is that many people spend most of their time thinking of problems, they tire themselves and have no energy for actions.
If you have a negative thought – you write it down in a special document. Then you create an appointment in your calendar and dedicate 30 minutes to purposefully thinking this thought.
Thinking negative thoughts and getting stressed with these thoughts is like having bugs in your head which are eating your energy. You should send these bugs away or dedicate special time slot just for dealing with them.
Do this “mind police” exercise at any time just to become skilled in not thinking unnecessary thoughts. It is especially effective in a moment when you feel anxiety.
I hope these tips are helpful.
To your happiness and success!
Professor Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi put years of practise in researching this special state which he calls “Flow”. Flow is when you are totally in a moment and you feel capable and powerful doing what you do. This is the only state when you can create something genius.
Good news is that you can also learn how to stimulate the state of flow and bring it into daily work.
We all knew this high state from childhood, when our dreams were very precise and they actually often came true.
You might have felt it when you learned how to ride a bike, or when you started swimming, or when you finally went on a trip, or when you created something just by yourself.
In our adult life we experience flow when we do something that we truly love. This might be something sport related, like dancing, yoga or martial arts. It can be also related to hobbies: writing, cooking, resolving some challenges. Flow appears when we gaze beauty. Flow is also very strong in sex.
There are 4 conditions that must be in place if you want to achieve flow in your WORK:
If you are not in a flow at work, than you are either too stressed or too bored there.
So, what can you do to elicit this wonderful state?
Organize your work schedule in a way that you have special time when you are not distracted to work on a specific goal that is important to you.
To do it easier, make sure that you absorb this state every time you are in it and fully enjoy it.
List the situations and contexts in which you experience flow. Think of the ways how to practise it more often.
We get used to doing something after 21 days of practising. And after 90 days we start doing it automatically without having to think of it. That is the strategy to grow a genius within you. Just start practising the state of flow for your maximum creativity and performance.
By the way, many advertising campaigns are made to provoke this state within us by showing us something inspiring or sexually driven. And we as consumers pay a lot for having a chance to experience this state.
I hope now you learned some useful techniques which will awaken a genius within you or simply make you a happy and fulfilled person.
To your success!
